One of my favorite things about Willow Brook is our diversity. Our students get a chance to meet people and learn about a variety of cultures just by getting to know the friends in their classroom. One of the things that comes along with that diversity is that our students are introduced to lots of things that are new to them. I am really big on being respectful about things that are new to you.
To help we read the book Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes. In the story Chrysanthemum loves her name because it is very different and special to her. When Chrysanthemum starts school several students start to tease her about her name and she starts to not like her name any more. Then a teacher helps her realize again why her name is so special. The book really helped the class have a great conversation about how to handle situations like: Seeing someone eat a food before in the cafeteria that they have never seen -or- being introduced to a person with a name that they have never heard before.
Fire Drill
We had our 1st fire drill today. We talked about why it is important to practice these skills just in case their is ever an emergency. The class did great! Take this as an opportunity to revisit your "fire plan" with your 2nd grader, so they know what to do in case there was ever a fire at home.
